thyssenkrupp and Embraer equip the Brazilian Navy for the future.

The Águas Azuis Consortium, formed by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Embraer Defense & Security and Atech, a subsidiary of the Embraer Group, was selected by the Brazilian Navy for the construction of four defense ships in the CCT Program – Tamandaré Class Corvettes as a preferred competitor. The result was announced today (03/28) and represents a new milestone for the country’s defense and naval industries.

With leadership from thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and its competence in naval systems, the companies of the Águas Azuis Consortium will now form a SPE (Specific Purpose Entity) for the execution phase of the program. Based on a long-term relationship and a strong presence in Brazil, the companies and their subsidiaries have built a solid national partnership with a proven ability to absorb technology and ensure its development not only for the CCT Program, but also for future strategic defense projects in the country. .

“We are very honored by the Brazilian Navy to entrust us with the mission of building the Tamandaré Class Corvettes. Being part of the CCT Program reinforces our leadership position and the proven technologies we have offered to the naval defense industry around the world for nearly two centuries,” highlights Dr. Rolf Wirtz, CEO of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. “This partnership will bring highly qualified jobs and technology to Brazil, strengthening its defense industry”, completes Wirtz.

“In this consortium with thyssenkrupp, we offer a solid model of national partnership with a proven ability to retain technology transfer, ensuring the development of future strategic defense projects in Brazil. We have always been confident and today’s result proves that our offer really meets the operational needs of the Brazilian Navy”, adds Jackson Schneider, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security.

National sovereignty

With the CCT Program, the Brazilian Navy will expand and modernize its Fleet. Escort Ships will play an important role in peacekeeping and humanitarian aid missions, contributing to Brazilian Diplomacy.

The CCT Program will bring real contributions to the Brazilian economy:

Local content greater than 40%, between the construction of ships and the development of state-of-the-art systems;

Development of the dual naval cluster (military and civil);

Generation of more than 1,000 direct jobs and approximately 4,000 indirect job positions;

Competitiveness to meet future demands of the Brazilian Navy and export of naval defense products;

Strengthening the triple helix (government, industry and universities) with the participation of research and development centers;

In-service support capacity for a high-tech product with a long life cycle.

The program contemplates a solid transfer of technology in the areas of naval engineering for the construction of military ships and of combat and platform management systems.

One of the most modern shipyards in Brazil, the Oceana Shipyard will act as a contractor contracted by Consórcio Águas Azuis, as well as a recipient of technology transfer (ToT) related to the project. Located in Itajaí (SC), a region with a strong vocation for the naval industry, the shipyard is part of the CBO Group, a company with over 30 years of experience in shipbuilding and offshore maritime operations. With approximately 310,000 square meters, the shipyard has adequate facilities for the construction of Tamandaré-class corvettes, and applies the most innovative engineering and construction processes, with a high level of automation and state-of-the-art technology. It also has facilities located in Niterói (RJ), which can serve as a logistical base and service support for the Brazilian Navy.

Atech, an Embraer Group company, will be the supplier of the CMS (Combat Management System) and the IPMS (Integrated Platform Management System) of the Tamandaré Class Corvettes and receiver of technology transfer (ToT) in cooperation with ATLAS ELEKTRONIK, a subsidiary of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, and the L3 MAPPS. Located in Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and São Paulo (SP), Atech has 500 engineers specialized in the development of software and hardware for defense applications and has unique expertise in systems engineering and situational awareness technologies and support for of decision.

Embraer Defense & Security will integrate sensors and weapons into the combat system, also bringing its 50-year experience in in-service support solutions to the program.

MEKO® Class: Authentic Blue Water Ship

The Águas Azuis Consortium presented to the Brazilian Navy a proposal based on the concept of the MEKO® Class, a world reference in proven solutions for shipbuilding. Its modular design facilitates local integration and technology transfer, helping to reduce acquisition, maintenance and modernization costs. Combining cutting-edge technology, innovation and robust combat capabilities, the MEKO® Class is a true escort for blue waters. These vessels have exceptional qualities of autonomy and robustness. As a result, many navies around the world have a flexible, versatile combat platform and general naval asset for diverse missions.

Since 1982, 82 MEKO® Class corvettes and frigates have been delivered to navies of 14 different nations, 37 of them produced outside Germany and all still in full operation – offering a life cycle of over 40 years. This class accumulates the benefits of five generations of vessels thanks to its design iteration, whereby the best design features of each ship evolve into the next, ensuring that new generations have solid and proven maturity, technology, materials and standards.
